Movie glamour came to Wetherby this week as the town centre was decorated with baubles and Christmas trees for the filming of Get Santa.

Executive produced by Ridley Scott the film crews focused in on the town hall, Black Bull pub and the Market Place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The heart-warming comedy drama from writer/director Christopher Smith, includes in the cast Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent alongside Rafe Spall, Stephen Graham, Ewen Bremner, Warwick Davis and Jodie Whittaker.

Broadbent takes the role as Santa Claus.

When his reindeer are seized and taken to Battersea Dogs Home, he attempts to rescue them but is caught and thrown in jail.

A comedy caper ensues when a young boy and his father decide to team up to spring Santa from prison.

Manager of Johnsons grocers Geoff Hardy said it had been interesting to see the film crews and actors at work but trade had been hit on Wednesday.

“They closed off the area where they were filming for about an hour at a time so obviously customers could not get through to our shop.

“Then when it opened up we only got a few people in.

“They had to close it off for safety reasons. There was a reindeer running backwards and forwards outside the shop during filming.

“It was quite interesting and in the end it should be good for the town.

“Hopefully when people see it in the cinemas they will think about coming to see Wetherby.”

Wetherby Mayor Coun Alan Lamb welcomed the arrival of the Get Santa crews as a boost for the town.

He told the News yesterday: “The filming of Get Santa is really exciting for Wetherby and is another great opportunity to showcase our wonderful town to the world.

“My only disappointment is that I didn’t get a part in the movie!”

Backed by the BFI, Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content fund, and Ingenious Media, Get Santa will be distributed in the UK by Warner Bros pictures and is due out at the end of this year.
