Elderly man dies following serious crash near Harrogate this morning

An elderly man has died following a crash between a bin lorry and a car at Blubberhouses this morning (April 19).

The crash happened on the road between Blubberhouses and Greenhow Hill, north of Thruscross reservoir, at 8.55am.

The lorry was travelling south from Pateley Bridge towards the Stonehouse Inn when it was involved in the crash with a Skoda Fabia, driven by the 70-year-old man, in the opposite direction.

The wagon driver, a man in his 20s, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with a serious arm injury and his passenger, another man in his 20s, was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesborough with a serious arm injury.

Police and fire crews from Harrogate and Ripon attended the crash but the Skoda driver, from Otley, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road remains closed while emergency services deal with the collision and to allow collision investigators to examine the scene.

A man driving a blue Mini travelling north towards Pateley Bridge stopped at the scene to help but left before the police arrived.

Police are now appealing for the blue Mini driver to contact them with information as well as any other people who may have witnessed the crashed.
