The Mayor of Wetherby held his first public event this week, opening the home of a new information board showing the cycle and footpath routes on the Harland Way.

Harry Chapman, who was elected as mayor at a town council meeting last month, was present at Scaur Bank overlooking the River Wharfe near Linton Road and the Harland Way itself, where the lectern holding the board is based.

The information board, including a map of the routes, was produced as part of a group effort between Wetherby Community Paths Partnership (WCCP), Wetherby Footpaths, and Sustrans - a charity pioneering healthy and cleaner journeys.

WCCP chairman Robert Vickers and secretary Barbara Ball were also in attendance at the official opening.

The partnership has been funded by Leeds City Council (LCC) and Wetherby town council for almost 15 years.

Mr Vickers said: “The Partnership promotes the use of them by ensuring that footpath signs are in place so that people can see that the paths exist.

“Over the years, volunteers from the Partnership have undertaken a considerable amount of work, litter-picking, repairing signs and reporting problems that need attention.

“This panel provides information about the Harland Way and the related footpaths and cycle routes in Wetherby. We are sure it will inform Wetherby people and visitors alike about the network of public footpaths in Wetherby.

“We are pleased to have the map in place in time for the celebrations of the Tour de France in Yorkshire.”
