Motor racing’s Simon Cowell has launched a search across Yorkshire for the next Formula One star in an X-Factor-style competition.
Racing guru Dan Woodrow has challenged schoolchildren across the district to show off their karting skills.
Driving hopefuls will attend three testing days at the Yorkshire Racing Academy (YRA) in April.
Mr Woodrow will then whittle down competitors based on their skills, fitness on screen personality and temperament.
The Formula Ford driver, from Wetherby, visited King James’s School in Knaresborough last week and is looking to go into other secondary schools in the area in his bid to promote the idea.
He said: “Because motor-sport is such an expensive thing to do, I am trying to take it to the masses and to people that are not from a privileged background.
“There’s not as many people racing today as there was four of five years ago as it’s harder to get coverage and sponsorship.
“My aim is to bring people a chance of a lifetime to drive.
“We want to find two new stars and take them into the world of racing.”
He added: “A driver needs to be more than someone who is fast.
“They also have to be media savvy and fit - they should be able to run for 40 minutes solid and will be expected to go to the gym three times a week.”
Dan added that they were not searching for people who already have a lot of experience in the sport.
“The idea is to take people who haven’t done a lot of racing or are totally new to karting.
“We are looking for people we can take forward to racing level.”
The two top racers will earn a season-long scholarship driving for the YRA, run by Formula Ford team 23 Racing, worth £18,000 each but will need to pay a £115 entry fee.
They will compete in seven race meetings in the Northern Karting Federation Championships and could race in Formula Ford later in the year.
“The Northern Karting Federation is a very popular Championship that races at some of the UK’s top karting tracks,” Mr Woodrow added.
People aged over 15-years-old can apply.
