Thousands of pounds worth of new equipment has been stolen after thieves broke into the garage of Tadcaster Magnet Sports and Social Club last week.
Intruders broke into the premises on Wednesday night by ripping off the door at the sports club, taking machinery with an estimated value of up to £10,000 pounds in the raid.
Items stolen included an orange tractor, three mowers, a strimmer and a welding machine.
Chairman of Tadcaster Magnet Cricket Club Tyron Naude said the loss of such equipment and damage had been ‘heartbreaking’ and had caused great inconvenience to the club.
He told the Wetherby News: “This has been heartbreaking. Our last cricket game of the season was on Saturday and we could only mow the track and not other areas as we had wanted to. A lot of equipment has been taken.
“We are lucky that this happened at the end of the cricket season rather than at the beginning and at this time of year, the grass is starting to grow more slowly so we have less cutting to do. However it has caused great inconvenience for us.
“I would like to appeal to the public to keep an eye out for anyone trying to sell such goods in the area and to contact the authorities if they see anything suspicious.”
Mr Naude added that a number of fundraising events had taken place earlier this year to help raise money for the equipment.
“It feels like we are right back at square one now. I think we all just feel violated that this has happened.”
North Yorkshire Police said they are appealing for witnesses.
