The Churchill Retirement Living development on York Road has been called Tatterton Lodge in honour of John Tatterton BEM who died last November.

Born in Wetherby, Mr Tatterton served as the town police officer for 30 years before retiring to become the local handyman and volunteering in a number of community roles for another 15 years.

The new Lodge name was suggested by winner Mrs Harris as part of a competition run by Churchill Retirement Living to name its new development.

Mrs Harris said: “The Lodge’s name honours and celebrates John’s selfless contribution to Wetherby, through many years as a community constable with a cheerful smile and advice. He was a friend to many and would help anyone. One of life’s true gentlemen.”

Rachel Walsh, Regional Sales Manager for Churchill Retirement Living, said: “Churchill likes to involve the local community in choosing the names for its developments and often does so by running a competition asking for suggestions.

"We received a vast number of entries for the Wetherby development but we particularly liked the local connection that Mrs Harris’ entry had.”

Mrs Harris was presented with a prize cheque for £100 at a naming ceremony alongside Mr Tatterton’s family.

John’s wife, Mavis Tatterton, said: “When we heard that the Lodge was going to be named after John, we thought it was a wonderful idea.

"I didn’t know Mrs Harris but I think it is a lovely way to remember all of the work that John did in the local community. I know he would be proud, but he’d also be asking what all the fuss is about!”

Tatterton Lodge is currently under construction and will comprise 56 private, self-contained apartments that are specially designed for retired owners.

Features of the apartments will include a video-entry system, lift access to all floors, a 24 hour care and support system, and a Lodge Manager.

There will also be a range of communal facilities such as an owners’ lounge, guest suite and landscaped gardens.
