A glittering giant star display on West Park will be the focal point of this year's Christmas lights display in Harrogate.

The three spectacular stars, each standing at just under 20 foot tall, will welcome visitors into Harrogate as part of a £30,000 investment into Christmas lights.

Stars will hang down above Cambridge Street, whilst baubles dangle down from Oxford Street with a stunning cluster of stars lighting up Princes Street.

All this year’s Christmas lights across the town centre have been newly purchased this year, ready for the Big Switch-On at the Victoria Centre on Thursday, November 17.

Coun John Fox, chair of Harrogate at Christmas, said he was excited for residents and visitors to see the new lights and confirmed there would be a big surprise in store at the switch-on.

He said: “The lights are absolutely fantastic and the focal point is a real wow factor. This is the first year we’ve really been able to do something as big as this.

“I’m looking forward to seeing them in action and I hope the residents are too, but they’re not just for the children in the town.

“It’s also important for driving the economy forward and supporting the local retailers at an important time of the year for them.

“We want people to come and shop in Harrogate, that’s why we’ve put so much money into the lights. It’s about bringing people into the town.”

The lights were provided by manufacturer The Festive Lighting Company with Harrogate company Acorn Lighting supporting the electrical works.

Harrogate Borough Council have put £10,500 of matched funding towards the new lights but Coun Fox explained the rest had to be raised through donations.

The Co-Op has become a diamond supporter of Harrogate at Christmas with Harrogate-based CNG Ltd returning as a major sponsor.

Father Christmas will switch the lights on this year, assisted by the Mayor of Harrogate Coun Nick Brown, outside the Victoria Shopping Centre at 6pm.

However, the festivities will begin at 4pm with live music and entertainment before a short carol service at St Peter’s Church at 6.15pm.

Coun Fox added: “Great Christmas lights make a real difference to the local economy, as people who come to see them will stay and spend money with local shops, restaurants, bars and cafes.

“We can’t wait to switch on the lights and we hope people will enjoy the new, improved festive look of Harrogate town centre this year.”
