Wetherby Whaler has been unveiled as the sponsor for Leeds Rhinos’ traditional Boxing Day fixture.

The iconic Yorkshire fish shop restaurant chain, founded in Tadcaster in 1969, added the deal to the sponsorship of the Rhinos Ladbrokes Challenge Cup Final try scorers Brad Singleton and Tom Briscoe.

Phillip Murphy, Co-owner of the Wetherby Whaler Group, said of the new catch which will see Wakefield and Leeds go head to head: “We’re absolutely delighted to be sponsoring the Wetherby Whaler Festive Challenge.

“We have worked in partnership with both Wakefield Wildcats and Leeds Rhinos and know that lots of our customers are die-hard rugby fans and many follow one of these teams.

“We’re looking forward to a cracking day, a great match and we’d encourage as many fans as possible to come along for what will be a great Boxing Day match.”

As well as the Wetherby shop and restaurant, Phillip and his wife Janine own a chain of restaurants throughout Yorkshire including York, Pudsey, and the famous Wetherby Whaler at Harry Ramsdens in Guiseley.

New Rhinos signing Australian Beau Falloon is looking forward to getting a chance to impress the huge crowd which is expected at Headingley on Boxing Day.

He commented: “I am really looking forward to it.

“I have been told about the traditional surrounding the game and over here in Australia there is a huge tradition of sport on Boxing Day with horse racing and cricket but it will be great to play some Rugby League on Boxing Day morning this year.

“I watched how the season ended for the boys last year and I can’t wait to pull on a Rhinos shirt.”

Tickets for the match, which kicks off at 11.30am on December 26, are £5 for juniors and family of four £40, in advance only.

They are are available either over the phone on 0371 423 1315 or by going down to the Leeds Rugby Store at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

They are currently not available online due to Leeds Rhinos changing to a new ticketing system. Leeds will advertise when they are available online in due course.
