Barwick in Elmet’s bid for Britain in Bloom glory came under the spotlight last week.

Judges Andrew Jackson and Martyn Hird visited the West Yorkshire hamlet to judge their entry as Yorkshire’s representative in the Large Village Category of national contest.

Geoff Yapp, secretary of Barwick in Bloom said: “The judges are on a two week nationwide tour judging the Large Village entries and Barwick in Elmet face stiff competition from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

“After a hectic year preparing their entry the gardeners of Barwick in Elmet can now relax until the October 12 when the results will be announced at the annual Awards Ceremony which will this year be held at Cleethorpes.”

Mr Yapp added that when the village last represented the county in Britain in Bloom in 2009 it achieved a prestigious Gold Rose Award and is hoping to repeat the success.
