Wetherby High’s leadership team look set to stay

New leadership brought in to make radical changes at Wetherby High School looks set to be made permanent as governors enter into talks on the school’s future.

Wetherby High is currently in partnership with Carr Manor Community School in Leeds, rated outstanding by Ofsted, and the two governing bodies have been working together to improve the high school after it dropped from ‘good’ to 
‘requires improvement’ at its last full Ofsted inspection.

Discussions now taking place are likely to make the relationship – first due to run to July 2015 – more permanent.

The acting headteacher at Wetherby High, Lucie Lakin, who has been in post with executive head Simon Flowers for five weeks, said: “Both governing bodies agree in principle to review the next steps of making the partnership more permanent.

“We haven’t done that yet and nothing is decided, but there is a firm certainty that both have found the partnership mutually beneficial.

“We are not in a partnership because there is anything wrong with this school, but are we the best we can be?

“We don’t want to just meet targets, we want to exceed them, and there are lots of indicators that the students are wanting to be challenged.

“Children are responding well to this new ethos and we are challenging them to be the best they can be.”

The school, which is expecting an Ofsted inspection this month, had its open evening for students moving on to secondary education in September 2015.

Questions about the future of the school were raised, and Mrs Lakin said she assured parents that the school is forging ahead.

Chair of governors Cindy Bentley said that though she couldn’t talk about the discussions, which are likely to take some time, the governing body was ‘delighted’ with the school’s progress.

She said: “We have started the discussions and there is no doubt that we are at the start of a very exciting time for the school and for the community.”

New policies at the school include a coaching scheme that sees students from all years meet in groups with teachers and other staff for guidance and support.

Changes like this are being welcomed by parents.

Nish Kanabar, who works at Castlegate Stationers, has a son, Daniel, currently in year eight at the school and is looking to send his younger son Jonathan there next year.

He said: “I am feeling positive about the school.

“It is good what the leadership team is doing - they are looking forward and trying to make a real difference, and I think it is very positive that they will still be there when my son Jonathan goes next year.”
