Self Esteem Team give advice to teens

Sherburn High welcomed Grace Barrett from The Self Esteem Team recently to talk to our students about coping with life.

The Team are dedicated to challenging stereotypes, reducing stigma surrounding mental health and educating young people (as well as their teachers and parents) on self-esteem and travel the UK to deliver their message.

A school spokesman said that Grace delivered assemblies directly addressing self-esteem issues to years 8, 9 and 10.

“She encouraged students to play the white writing game when watching adverts with reference to Cheryl Hernadez-Versinis’ L’Oréal endorsement,” she said.

“The Team work alongside the All Parties Parliamentary Group (APP) on body image, specifically reporting on the issues faced by 14–18-year-olds.

“They are also influential in giving the Broadcast Advertising and Market Centre (BACC) advice on advertising standards for health and beauty brands.”

Grace also shared useful revision tips with years 10, 11 and 12 and advice on how to cope with exam stress.

She helped students explore their responses to exam stress and find ways to manage their nerves.

The Team have recently written a book with advice for teenagers on how to cope with many of the issues facing them.

“We have copies in the school library but it is also available in bookshops and is also available on prescription from the doctors as a resource for teenagers to help them deal with self-esteem issues.”

Event organiser Luci Davies, Careers and Vocational Support Co-Ordinator, said: “Feedback from students had been very positive, they described Grace’s approach and advice as inspirational.

“Grace certainly struck a chord with many students; she mapped out a positive template for students to refer to when navigating through the stresses and strains of being a teenager.”

“The founding principle of our class is that every person in the room should be able to take something away that is relevant to their own life,” said Grace who added that the organisation works to change beauty standards.
