The founder of Halifax Organ Academy was so impressed with the standard of a school band’s current CD, he has invited them to perform at Halifax Minster.
Tadcaster Grammar School Big Band will be performing in concert on Friday November 22 at 7pm and hopes to raise its already prolific profile as well as the roof.
“I am a member of the Halifax Organ Academy and regularly have the opportunity to play the organ in the Minster and attend Masterclasses,” said Gillian Hainsworth, teacher of music at the school and leader of the Big Band, who will give her next recital there in the New Year.
“Professor David Baker, listened to our latest CD recently and was so impressed, he suggested we play at the Minster and it went on from there,” she said.
The band has an outstanding reputation across the region, regularly performing in local churches, schools and at community events and was specially invited to perform at the Olympic Games Torch Relay event in Tadcaster in 2012.
It is also renowned for its pie and pea supper evenings and Jazz in the Marquee.
Comprising 25 members aged between 12-18, the talented group of young musicians, under the baton of Mrs Hainsworth, will strike up at the Minster with such classics as In The Mood, Little Brown Jug, A String of Pearls and American Patrol and with more modern pieces including Feeling Good, Beyond The Sea and Singin In The Rain.
“We feel terribly excited and honoured as this is a prestigious venue and we will definitely be blowing our own trumpets to promote the event,” said Mrs Hainsworth.
Tickets costing £5 for adults, £3 for children and a family ticket for £15 (2 adults/2 children) are available by contacting the Main Reception desk at Tadcaster Grammar School on 01937 833466, Halifax Minster Office on 01422 355436 or by email on email@example.com. Alternatively they can be bought on the door.
“The volunteers at the Minster are busy promoting our concert and are kindly going to feed the students too,” said Mrs Hainsworth.
“It should be a very successful evening and we hope it won’t be too far away for our faithful followers to join us,” she added.
