A Harrogate primary school is enjoying a smashing series of fun tennis sessions to coincide with the Wimbledon Championships, with help from housebuilder Redrow.

It was game on when Redrow Homes treated classes across Key Stages 1 and 2 from St Roberts Catholic Primary School in Harrogate to Wimbledon-themed tennis activities at the Harrogate Spa Tennis Centre.

The housebuilder has paid for each class to attend a fun 45 minute introduction to tennis session - each held under the expert guidance of Tennis Harrogate’s tennis coordinator Matt McTurk and his team.

Activities included racket and ball skills, hand eye coordination techniques and games aimed at enthusing every child.

The day got off to a winning start when marketing coordinator Rebecca Cliff and sales consultant Hannah Lakey from Redrow’s nearby Devonshire Gardens development, attended morning assembly to meet the school’s staff and children.

Activity then continued at the tennis centre with several classes enjoying instruction until, in typical Wimbledon fashion, rain stopped play, temporarily.

Class teacher Ben Ibbetson, who helped to organise the event said: “Our thanks go to Redrow for laying on the tennis day and the Harrogate Spa Tennis Centre for hosting it.

“Sport is often a favourite with children and the chance to play tennis on a full court makes this even more meaningful, doubly so as it’s in the middle of Wimbledon.”

Rebecca Cliff, for Redrow, said: “Our Devonshire Gardens development is proving a smash hit with growing families and with both the school and the tennis centre just a short walk away, it seemed like a nice idea to get together during Wimbledon fortnight. We are very pleased to fund this event and hope that all the children have a great time.”

Matt McTurk added: “I am hugely passionate about getting more children involved in tennis, especially at primary school age. If we can interest them now, hopefully they can go on to be inspired later on, whether they play socially or competitively.

“At the tennis centre we are keen to engage with the community – making tennis more available and affordable to everyone.

“It can be a sport for life, not only playing an important role in a healthy lifestyle, but it’s lots of fun too.”
