A Boston Spa specialist school has been graded outstanding in all areas by Ofsted inspectors.
West Oaks Specialist School and College (SEN) in Boston Spa, which deals with pupils with a range of learning difficulties, including Autism and speech disorders, was inspected by the national body last month.
Many areas of the school’s work were praised in the report with inspectors saying: “Staff are a highly effective and skilled team.
“They know how to get the best from pupils.
“Not a minute is lost in helping pupils to learn or to do things for themselves.
“Pupils make exceptional progress in developing language and communication skills.
“They are learning to enjoy books and are proud of the progress they have made to improve their reading and writing.”
The inspection, which was carried on November 7 and 8, said the school has seen an increase of pupils with “complex communication needs” since the previous inspection.
It was marked Outstanding in four categories which included achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management.
The report goes on to say: “The school’s outstanding leaders and managers make excellent use of partnerships and research ideas to drive improvements in teaching.”
Principle at the school, Andrew Hodkinson, said: “I am really pleased that the Ofsted team recognised the highly skilled staff team that work at West Oaks SEN Specialist School and College and that they also acknowledged that not a minute is lost in helping pupils to learn or do things for themselves.”
Across the city Leeds has the highest quality of SEN specialists with a total of 83 per cent of schools judged good or outstanding by Ofsted, Leeds City Council said.
The Ofsted report is available on the school website.
