At its height, ten appliances were tackling the blaze throughout the night before it was eventually scaled down at around 7am.

A 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, both from the Harrogate area, were arrested on Monday afternoon on suspicion of arson.

They have been released on bail while enquiries continue.

The fire broke out on the former Alexander Court Care Home site, which closed down in 2014 following 'mounting concerns' over nursing care.

Residents were advised to keep their windows shut to protect them from the smoke as firefighters battled the blaze.

Fire crews remained at the scene of the fire yesterday, dampening down hot spots and carried out a revisit last night.
