The owner of a filthy Chinese takeaway in Sherburn-in-Elmet has been fined £4,000 after rat droppings were found in the kitchen.
A customer complaint about the Green Dragon takeaway on Finkle Hill sparked a visit from Selby Council’s Environmental Health officers.
The officers found a poorly managed kitchen that was untidy and dirty.
The kitchen was mouldy, there was no soap in the wash basin of the toilet and there were rat droppings present. The premises scored a zero’ under the national food hygiene safety scheme.
Owner Zhong le Chen, 38, of Topcliffe Mount in Selby, pleaded guilty last Thursday at York Magistrates Court to four counts of failing to comply with food hygiene regulations.
Chen was fined £1,000 per offence, ordered to pay costs of £1,000 and a surcharge of £120.
Enforcement Officer Tim Grogan said: “This prosecution clearly demonstrates that Selby District Council will take all necessary enforcement action where people who supply food to the public are found to be blameworthy and breaches of legislation are considered detrimental to people’s health.”
Since the offence, Environmental Health officers have been working with Chen to make sure food hygiene regulations are complied with at the premises.
