Scholes and Barwick-in-Elmet are among the top 20 postcode districts most likely to claim for theft on their home insurance, according to a Money Supermarket report.
The company’s most recent claims tracker puts the two villages at 20th on the list, with 40.8 of every 1,000 home insurance quotes containing a claim for burglary.
This means residents will pay more for home insurance than postcode districts in Bridlington or Sewerby in East Yorkshire, which are among the districts ranked 13th least likely to claim for theft, as insurers factor in the probability of a burglary claim when pricing insurance policies.
However, Barwick and Scholes parish council and the neighbourhood policing team have both said the villages are not burglary hot spots.
Parish council chair Ben Hogan said: “This month there were five crimes and they were all in Barwick, and the previous month there were seven crimes and six of those were in Scholes.
“Five or six crimes, although we could do with none at all, is not something that is serious in my mind.
“I was in the insurance business for many years and I don’t think this area suffers from insurance companies because of many claims.”
The Outer North East area, including Wetherby and Harewood wards, has had fewer house burglaries compared to last year, with more than 50 fewer homes affected, according to Inspector Paul Dwyer of the Outer North East Neighbourhood Policing Team.
He said: “Barwick-in-Elmet and Scholes are not areas with high rates of burglary, either compared to other wards in the Outer North East area or within the Leeds district.
“Reducing the number of victims of burglary even further remains a key focus of our work and the police will continue working closely with our partner agencies and the public to reduce and prevent this type of crime.
“We urge residents to remain vigilant and give appropriate attention to their home security including upgrading euro profile door locks with the latest anti-snap locks.”
Barwick-in-Elmet and Scholes are ranked alongside Austhorpe, Colton, Cross Gates, Galton, Halton Moor, Manston, Pendas Fields, Temple Newsam, Whitkirk at 20th in the list of postcode districts most likely to claim for theft on their home insurance, with 40.8 of every 1,000 home insurance quotes containing a claim for burglary.
The top district was Dagenham in Greater London, followed by Gants Hill in Greater London, Chorlton-cum-Hardy in Manchester, Intake in South Yorkshire, and Woodford in London.
Lochee, Dumfries, and Aldochlay in Scotland are at the bottom of the list, with Felixstowe in Suffolk and Bangor in Wales.
