A Christmas clampdown on drink drivers has resulted in eight arrests in Harrogate and Knaresborough.
Five people have now been charged with drink driving in the district since December 1 in the blitz by North Yorkshire Police.
Some of them, say the force, could be stripped of their licenses before Christmas.
“The simple fact is drink driving ruins lives and destroys families who lose loved ones in tragic circumstances,” said TS Paul Cording.
“The devastating thing is that deaths caused by drink driving could have been avoided if only the person who thought it was OK to get behind the wheel while under the influence had stopped to think about the consequences.”
Countywide, there have been 37 arrests, with police carrying out numerous roadside breath tests. Of these, 25 have been formally charged.
“The safest and simplest way to avoid being arrested for drink driving or causing a serious accident is by not drinking at all,” added TS Cording.
“Do whatever you can to get home safely but whatever you do, don’t drink or take drugs and drive.”
