The chip shop has been in owner Paul Vickers’ family for 28 years and the top fryer can’t see that changing.

“I am just the guardian of this chip shop,” he said. “It was here before I was even born and it will be here long after.”

Mr Vickers also said his staff experience contributed to the chippy’s success.

“The four senior members of staff have got more than 70 years experience between us.”

I am delighted that they have voted for us, we really wanted to win this.

He added: “We have got a loyal customer base here, I recognise my customers, I know them , I know what they order.

“I am delighted that they have voted for us, we really wanted to win this.”

Mr Vickers is planning to thank his loyal customers with a charity day for the city.

All of the takings on the day of St Wilfred’s procession will go to charity, as Mr Vickers’ way of thanking Ripon.

Last year saw the take-away undergo a modern makeover and refit, but still kept to the traditional formula of serving up the best quality product at the best prices, Mr Vickers said.

Meanwhile the Frying Pan in Wetherby has been named the runner up in the competition.

“I am just so pleased,” owner Andrew Plowman said. “I am disappointed not to be first, but in a way this makes us the best chip shop in Wetherby!”

The popular shop has been rustling up fish and chip suppers since 1967 and has been in Mr Plowman’s family for 18 years.

He said: “My parents ran it for 13 years and I have had it for four. It was a good established business so I haven’t changed things.”

He added: “There is no secret, just good produce, traditional cooking and great staff.

“We get our deliveries fresh daily, we use quality fish and keep the quality up.”

Mr Plowman thanked his team of six staff and said: “It is great that our customers took the time and effort to vote for us.”
