A cancer survivor is urging people to saddle up and help fund valuable work into beating the disease.
Ken Brewer, of Wetherby, underwent successful treatment for prostrate cancer and is looking forward to taking part in this year’s Wetherby Cycle Ride to raise cash for Cancer Research UK, based at St James Hospital in Leeds.
The 72-year-old former businessman of Northgrove Approach said: “It is great to do something like this as it gives me a chance to repay them for all the care I have been given.
“I will follow the 30 miles at Wetherby with 70 miles in the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride two weeks later.”
In late 2010 Ken found a spot of blood and, after consulting his GP, Harrogate District Hospital Urology Department found that Ken’s Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) was higher than normal.
Three monthly checks in 2011 showed a steady climb in the PSA and just before Christmas that year Ken had is second prostate biopsy.
In early 2012 the results showed that 20 per cent of the samples were cancerous and it was agreed that brachytherapy was a suitable form of treatment.
In June 2012 the brachytherapy was performed. The operation involves radioactive iodine being inserted into the prostate.
“I was offered brachytherapy and was told that I would have good quality of life for the next 15 years,” explained Ken.
“I’m just enjoying a day at a time.”
Rather than sitting back he sees a personal trainer once a week, takes part in the U3A cycling run every week and spends nearly every Sunday at the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway.
The 17th Wetherby Bike Ride, sponsored by David Stainthorpe of Cyclesense and organised by Ann and Jeff Newton of Boston Spa, will take place on Sunday June 8, leaving Wetherby High at 10.30am.
“I cover all the costs which makes sure that all the money raised goes to Cancer Research,” said David who has stores at Tadcaster and Thorp Arch.
“Children and families come year after year and it’s great to see them turn out for this event.”
The entry fees are £8 for adults, £4.50 for children and £19.50 for families (maximum four people).
