The diploma offering something different

A PUBLIC and media relations company is giving students the competitive edge by launching its own ‘diploma’.

Different PR, the Harrogate-based agency founded by former journalists David Simister and Richard Chew, offers undergraduates the opportunity to experience a practical working environment and gain an insight to the public relations industry.

As well as opening its doors to students from across Yorkshire, particularly those on the PR degree course at Leeds Met University, Different has also welcomed people from as far away as Germany and Poland.

The ‘Different Diploma’ is designed to complement the student’s university course work. Students have to pass a set number of relevant tasks – to a specific standard - including news release writing, compiling media lists and preparing for new business ‘pitches’.

Director David Simister said: “The Different Diploma is something the students can put in their portfolio and show to prospective employers, either when applying for short-term placements or for a full time job once they have graduated.”

Director Richard Chew added: “While some other companies are cutting back on the opportunities they offer students, Different PR continues to provide training, even to those just starting out on their career path.”
