Business backing boosts hospice’s work

As a hospice care charity marks 30 years serving the Harrogate district, the award-winning corporate initiative responsible for driving forward its strategy continues to go from strength to strength.

Saint Michael’s Hospice has announced the latest member to join its thriving Guild of Patrons, welcoming multi-channel retailer High Street TV to the exclusive corporate scheme.

A select community of local and regional businesses - patrons - each contribute £15,000 of support over a three-year period to safeguard the future of care for families affected by terminal illness and bereavement.

As well as offering sustainable financial support in the form of a corporate donation, companies across the district are increasingly unlocking the power of their people to redouble the impact they make locally.

Since July 2016, the staff team at High Street TV have raised more than £17,000 on top of the organisation’s membership donation by taking on challenges including Total Warrior and the Leeds Abbey Dash, as well as holding events such as The Great High Street TV Bake Off.

High Street TV marketing director, Francesca Woodward, explained how membership of the Guild has catalysed the support of the organisation’s 150-strong staff team.

“High Street TV wanted to help support the hospice while raising awareness of the fantastic work they do for local people,” she said. “The charity provides an essential support service for so many members of the local community and as one of its many patrons, all of High Street TV employees feel really proud to pull together with a real purpose and passion to achieve something that is so much bigger than the sum of our parts.”

A Saint Michael’s spokesman said that the Deloitte Millennial Survey (2017) found that “opportunities to be involved with ‘good causes’ at the local level, many of which are enabled by employers, provide millennials with a greater feeling of influence”.

Francesca said: “Through all of our incredible efforts and achievements we have now raised over £17,000 for Saint Michael’s since joining the Guild.

“We are really pleased to have been able to make such a significant contribution and we are all now looking forward to a jam-packed calendar of fundraising activity for 2017 to try to raise even more money for this wonderful cause.”

With one in two people across the district touched by the work of Saint Michael’s, the charity remains a relevant cause for employees, customers and business leaders alike.

Chief executive of Saint Michael’s, Tony Collins, explains how, in the charity’s anniversary year, support from local businesses is more vital than ever.

“Saint Michael’s is as firmly rooted at the heart of the community as when it was founded in 1987,” he said.

“We are proud of our achievements across three decades; from pioneering beginnings, Saint Michael’s has grown from strength to strength and our services are now supporting more local people than ever before.

“It is no exaggeration to say that this would not have been possible without the support of our community, and the Guild of Patrons is a key part of this legacy, having contributed more than £1.5m since its inception in 2008.

“But as we look ahead to the next 30 years, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. More people are living longer with more complex needs.

“We need to act now, investing to rapidly upscale the end of life care available in our community.

“We are delighted to welcome High Street TV to the dynamic group of businesses helping us to make this vital investment, and we would like to say a huge thank you to the High Street TV staff team for the energy and enthusiasm they continue to show in support of Saint Michael’s.”

It costs Saint Michael’s £5m to provide care and support to local families, and around 80 per cent of the charity’s annual income must be generated through voluntary contributions and fundraising initiatives like the Guild of Patrons.

The Guild offers members unique business benefits, including increased profile and the opportunity to demonstrate corporate values to customers, clients and staff.
