Barwick school fair: Saturday’s Christmas fair at Barwick Church of England Primary School promises to be ‘a truly magical event’ say its organisers, the friends of the school. With carol singing, Santa’s grotto, craft stalls for Christmas shopping and refreshments including mulled wine, mince pies and jacket potatoes it certainly looks like an ideal way to escape from the madding crowds of city centre shoppers. The fair will be held in the school from 3-6pm and all funds raised will contribute to the friends’ bold programme to improve the school’s facilities, including a new library and Active Learning Centre.

Horticultural society: a presentation describing several European gardens will be given by guest speaker Tony Cleaver at next Monday’s meeting of Barwick in Elmet Horticultural Society. This will be held at the village hall at 7.45pm and will include seasonal refreshments.

Scholes achievement: members of Scholes Methodist Chapel wish to thank everyone who has supported their charity coffee mornings this year, raising more than £2,500 for good causes locally, nationally and overseas. There is no coffee morning in December so the next one will be on Saturday, January 4 when bacon butties will be sizzling once again.

Winter wonderland: well known flower arranger Derek Armstrong will demonstrate how to create A Winter Wonderland at the pre-Christmas meeting of Barwick in Elmet Flower Club. This will be held next Wednesday, December 11 at Scholes Village Hall, 7.30pm. Tickets costing £10, which will include wine and seasonal refreshments, can be obtained from committee members or by calling (0113) 264-5491.

Christmas concert: members of the popular, locally-based choral group The Wendel Singers will perform a concert of carols and Christmas music at Barwick in Elmet Methodist Chapel on Friday, December 13 at 7.30pm. All proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army. Tickets costing £5 for adults and just £1 for children, to include coffee and mince pies, can be bought at the door or in advance by calling Cynthia Hinde, tel (0113) 281-3440.

Christingle services: traditional Christingle services, enjoyed by families as well as individuals, will be held in both Barwick and Scholes this month. The first will be at All Saints’ Church, Barwick, at 6pm on Thursday, December 12 and, in Scholes, at St Philip’s Church at 5.30pm on Sunday, December 15. All are welcome to attend.

Carols by candlelight: singing traditional carols in the warm, flickering glow of candlelight is, for many people, an ideal way to begin their Christmas celebration. There will be two of these services in Barwick and Scholes, both on Sunday, December 22. The earlier service, at 4pm, will be at Scholes Methodist Chapel, the later at 6.30pm at All Saints’ Church, Barwick. Between the two, at 5.30pm, will be a carol service at St Philip’s Church, Scholes. A guide to other Christmas services to be held in both Barwick and Scholes, including crib services, will be included in next week’s issue.
