A BOSTON SPA couple have decided to call it a day after more than two decades working at the heart of the community.

Husband and wife Paul, 65, and Yvonne Thornley, 59, will soon retire after running Boston Spa Post Office for 22 years.

Yvonne said: “We have found working here over the years very enjoyable and we would like to thank all our customers for all their support.

“Some customers have been disappointed we are leaving and made some nice comments to us about it.

“We have known a lot of customers for a long time.”

“Since we started here 22 years ago, the post office has expanded quite a lot, we now do things such as the currency and passport check.

“We have also had all the new modern technology come in since we first started here, which we have adjusted to well.”

Yvonne added that she will miss her customers, and is on first-name terms with many of them.

The couple, who have three grown up daughters, Charlotte, Hannah and Sophie, will be retiring in two weeks’ time and will move to Thirsk where they plan to spend more time with their four grandchildren.

They currently live in York.

In 2008 the couple won an award for Best Commercial Post Office in the UK at a glittering awards ceremony in central London.

The couple were presented with a lifetime service certificate in 2009 and were congratulated for offering a reliable, efficient service to the local community.
