TWO Scarcroft women have teamed up to launch their own golf croquet sessions in the village this spring.

When, two years ago Ann Wickert and Sue Stothers, went on a taster day to Huddersfield Syngenta Croquet club, they immediately fell in love with the game.

Now they have decided to set up their own golf croquet sessions at Scarcroft Cricket Club after being surprised to find their nearest croquet clubs were York, Huddersfield or Ripon.

Ann said: “We sensed that between Wetherby and Leeds we had a large enough catchment area to make a club viable and Scarcroft offered us the ideal location and amenities.”

The duo will be offering lessons of golf croquet - a faster and simpler type of game to association croquet - to people at all different levels.

Scarcroft Cricket Club chairman Simon Johnson, keen to develop additional sports at the cricket club, offered the duo the use of two croquet lawns and club house facilities.

Ann said: “Golf croquet is a game for all, it can be played competitively at regional and national level, but for people who want a less competitive, social game the club offers this too.

“As the club becomes established we envisage a full social and playing calendar with the opportunity to play in regional leagues and friendly matches with other clubs.”

The club will be holding sessions at a launch open day to mark the start of the croquet season on Sunday, April 1 from 11am to 4pm.

Beginners throughout are welcome.
