Review: Sitting Room Comedy Club, Mike Gunn + Lloyd Griffith, Carly Smallman, St George Hotel, Harrogate.

Early January isn’t the best time to hold a sho w but I was delighted to stroll into a packed-out room at the St George Hotel; surely testament to Sitting Room Comedy Club’s ever expanding reputation for quality line-ups?

The undeniable draw this month was headliner Mike Gunn, one of the comedians successfully featured on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.

Appearances can be deceptive and Mike Gunn is a case in point: he does not look funny but that soon changes.

Gunn let loose a barrage of brilliantly constructed material beginning with a long, alphabetised list of ‘things women like that men don’t’.

Gunn’s take on this cliched ‘trope’ is brilliantly unique and ultimately hilarious.

Via a damning synopsis of Gok Wan’s How to Look Good Naked and his wife’s attachment to her wedding dress, Gunn closed with various stories about his elderly father who refuses to die.

At the end of his 40-minute set, Gunn turned to promoter Tom Taylor and asked whether he could do a bit longer, a question which resulted in a resounding yes.

A further 15 minutes provided a fitting conclusion to a set which was packed with laughs from start to finish.

The undercard of Lloyd Griffith, Carly Smallman and resident MC Tom Taylor, provided strong support.

Griffith’s ‘likeable-lad’ persona made him an excellent opening act and his handling of a potentially troublesome front row was charming.

Smallman’s songs of love (desired) and relationships (non-existent) were charismatic and nicely constructed; includingserenading one hapless audience member.

Next month’s line-up of Gary Delaney, Paul Thorne and Alan Francis; high quality headliners to a man from major comedy clubs on the national circuit.
