Homecoming for McCartney's versatile artist/designer
A YORKSHIRE artist whose We Are Pop collection was a popular success for RedHouse Originals at the John Mackie Gallery in Harrogate last year, is holding his first-ever one-man show in his home town.
Painter and applied artist Dudley Edwards, who first came to fame in the 'flower power' era as part of the design collective BEV, is currently showing a new collection of his work at the Dean Clough Gallery in Halifax.
Now living just outside Wetherby, Edwards was, perhaps, best known in the Swinging Sixties for designing the Magic Piano which ex-Beatle Paul McCartney uses for live concerts to this day.
A broad and varied career since then has seen his work appearing in major galleries around the world, including The Whitney Musuem of Art in New York, The V&A in London and the Tate Gallery in Liverpool.
The gallery describes the new exhibition as "an ambitious blend of mystical mathematics and esoteric symbolism that nevertheless draws on painters as diverse as Bonnard, Vermeer, Degas, Hopper and Hammershoi to portray 'the human condition."
Over the years, he has continued to work with major corporate clients and, as an applied artist, enjoys working with architects and interior designers.
Edwards celebrity associations continue to the present through Amazed, the bespoke rugs and wall hangings company he established with his wife, Madeleine. And he's even directed his own movie!
The Dean Clough Gallery opens between 10am- 5pm, seven days a week. Runs to March 7.
