Would-be reviewers in the district’s schools are being mentored by Harrogate Theatre and the Harrogate Advertiser in an exciting new Young Reviewers scheme, writes Graham Chalmers.

Helmed by the theatre’s Education Workshop Leader, Hannah Draper, the pick of the bunch this month was a review of Jack & The Beanstalk written by Ellen Carnazza of King James’s School, Knaresborough.

Review - Jack & The Beanstalk,

Harrogate Theatre.

By Ellen Carnazza of King James’s School, Knaresborough

Seven years after I last went to see a pantomime, Harrogate Theatre’s Jack & the Beanstalk has left me wondering why it has taken me so long to return.

We follow the story of young Jack Trott (Katy Dean) who - as he has for hundreds of years - swaps his beloved cow for some magic beans and embarks on a crazy adventure meeting fairies, cooks, princesses and giants along the way.

And, of course, that one person (there’s always one) who isn’t rooting for Jack: Philip Stewart’s wonderfully wicked villain, Fleshcreep.

He’s the character we all love to hate, as shown by the cheers mingled in with the boos as the audience forget for a moment which side they are really on.

Making the show that little bit more special is the lovable Simple Simon (Tim Stedman), a favourite of both children and adults alike.

His energy and silliness is infectious and had everyone, aged from one to 101, laughing and yelling along.

All the traditional elements of a great pantomime are here: the terrible jokes you can’t help but laugh at; the Dame’s outrageous but fabulous costumes; and the entertaining song-and-dance routines.

This truly is a fantastic welcome back to panto world. It runs until Sunday.
