Gig Scene: Bring on AMP Awards 2013!

editorial image

The annual AMP Awards is more than just a battle of the bands for schools, which is why I’ve always been keen to be involved as a judge and support them in any way I can, writes Gig Scene Editor Graham Chalmers.

From the start four years ago, the AMPs have set themselves an important, additional goal - to develop students’ business and marketing skills.

Each week in the build-up to this year’s final in the glittering surroundings of the Royal Hall in Harrogate on Wednesday, February 13 we will be profiling more of the young, talented groups who have fought their way through to the big event.

Look out on this website for profiles as we go on.

Incidentally, there’s an AMP Awards Band Development Dayfor all the finalists this Sunday at Boroughbridge High School.

It’s run by AMP’s director and head of music at Boroughbridge High School, Josh Hill, in conjunction with Music Development partners Matt Burrows from Connecting Youth Culture and Rich Huxley, professional band musician and member of the enormously successful band Hope & Social .

Huxley, @TheHuxCapacitor, one of the most enterprising and energetically enthusiastic musicians around, will mentor the bands on their performance style and give them some stagecraft tips.

The day will be broken down into workshops for each band to include a session with Matt on song and lyric writing plus an opportunity to record one of the band’s original AMP songs (they must play two original songs in the actual final). Josh Hill will also be motivating the bands to demonstrate the art of music enterprise, which these days includes using all the social media opportunities to promote themselves.
