AS a parent of a child at St Edward’s Primary School in Boston Spa I must object to the ridiculous proposal for restricted parking and waiting on Westwood Way, Chaly Fields, Primrose Lane and High St. Boston Spa, all roads within very close proximity
of three local schools.

My concerns are for the safety of my child and the other local children on their way to school as it seems the Highways Department and some of the local residents who have bought a house on a street with three schools have not taken this safety issue into consideration.

My objections are for the following reasons: Parents drop their children off and pick them up going to and from work. Not being able to park outside school would mean parents having to renegotiate working hours (if possible) to accommodate the extra time needed for pick up and drop off. This is absolutely not acceptable. The congestion on High Street with additional parking will cause delays adding more time on a journey to work. No provision for crossing Boston High Street which is a very busy road with fast flowing traffic all day. Many families do not live within walking distance of the schools. No cars parked outside schools will result in a much faster flow of traffic and with more children walking and crossing the road the likelihood of an accident is much higher. Nowhere to park when attending school functions, parents’ evenings and meetings. People on their own would be expected to walk to Boston to pick up their cars.

I wonder, could the Highways Department offer a full explanation as to why this proposal has got this far, the valid reasons behind it and why this order had not been sent to the local schools concerned as of May 1? It all seems extremely excessive as, after all, cars are parked for a maximum of half an hour in the morning and afternoon, five-days-a-week, term time only.
