A MAN telephoned Bettys pretending he had found a hornet in his box of champagne truffles.
The man – who is now being sought by police for the scam – called staff at the Harlow Carr and Parliament Street branches to demand a refund for the £26 chocolates.
He said he had bought the truffles, found the hornet and returned the box to the shop. He continued the phone call by telling staff he had been promised a refund, but it had not arrived.
He then gave his details, using the same card number in calls to both branches but a different name each time.
Harrogate Police Inspector Mike Woodhall said: "It appears someone is dishonestly trying to obtain money on a credit card.
"If it is attempted fraud we will be knocking on the door of that person very shortly once we have details from the credit card company."
