Magician aims for Olympic revival
A MAGICIAN is bidding to introduce a 'touch of magic' to this year's Olympics event in Beijing!
The once vibrant and popular sport of Synchronised Magic, also known as Sink Magic, has long been forgotten but could be set for a dramatic renaissance thanks to magician and children's entertainer, Bob McBratney, who is also president of The Harrogate Society of Magicians.
As chief coach of the UK team, Bob has written to Monsieur Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee to ask that the sport be recognised by the IOC and allowed to perform at Beijing or at the latest, London in 2012.
The dedicated group of local magic enthusiasts have been working hard to revive the sport which was once at the heart of the Royal Courts of medieval Kings and Queens and thought to have last been performed at competitive level during the reign of Henry V.
"In those the days the game of Wores Moi Ankys Gon was played very differently to today, for example, if a member of the team performed poorly they were quite likely to lose their head – literally!" explained Bob.
He added: "In the modern game poor performance is not punished quite so brutally but nevertheless teams take their matches very seriously.
"For the 21st century the game has taken on a new look with a funky new name Synchronised Magic or Sink Magic (as it's known on the street).
"Like most modern sports, to play in the top echelon of Sink Magic requires players to have a degree of fitness far beyond that of social or local club level – these guys are top athletes with extraordinary inner strength, to see them in action is awesome."
The Harrogate Society of Magicians is the driving force behind the sports renewed popularity.
Bob said: "The team are at the top of their game, they're pumped up and going for gold. Not even the French could beat us to the podium – our team's on fire, they're just unstoppable".
The first official showing for the UK squad is in Knaresborough's Frazer Theatre tonight.
This will be a friendly match but nonetheless the audience can expect some breathtaking synchronised magic.
"An Evening of Fun and Magic for All the Family" starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 and £5 and are available from Art on the Mill, Green Dragon Yard, Knaresborough or call 01423 340568.
All proceeds from this fundraising event to The Frazer Theatre and The Harrogate Society of Magicians.
