Tough law needed for vandals

From: Paul C Thompson, Scarcroft.

THE news that steps are being taken to curb the anti-social behaviour on the new Sandringham playground was not unexpected.

The last wrecked playground was removed for just this reason and it was quite expected to continue a generation later with the new one. Signs only clarify the standard playground age restriction and are soon vandalised by many under 13.

As under age smoking and drinking, the culprits never see a police station or courtroom, only the supplying shopkeepers. Being responsible, until retiring, for 175 local authority children’s playgrounds, I saw this anti-social behaviour and vandalism increase steadily for many years; the do-gooders say we should not criminalise young people. The police have powers to move them on. But they are back again tomorrow. Until society is prepared to be serious, grasp the nettle, get the yobs down to the station, put them before the magistrates, together with their parents, things will continue to deteriorate regardless of a few signs.
