The reassuring sight of traffic police catching bad drivers

From: Nando Loidis, Scarcroft, Leeds

I WOULD like to say how reassuring it was to see a traffic policeman, on the lookout for problem drivers, parked close to my home in Scarcroft last weekend.

I was out walking on both Saturday and Sunday - and on both occasions saw that the officer had managed to intercept drivers who fell foul of the laws of the A58.

I was particularly pleased to witness one of these occasions as it unfolded. A driver elected to overtake a lorry in a 30mph zone, at a speed clearly in excess of 30mph, blissfully unaware of the parked-up policeman.

As somebody who can often be found walking along the A58, I was delighted to see the officer at work.

I often watch in horror as people flout the speed limits, talk unashamedly on hand-held mobile phones, or execute questionable manoeuvres in their vehicles.

The A58 between Wetherby and Scarcroft has seen numerous accidents in recent years, I can think of at least seven fatal events, and while not all can be attributed to bad driving it is clear that this is a dangerous section of carriageway that needs to be properly policed.

I fully appreciate that the police can't have a permanent presence at specific sections of our roads, but perhaps the occasional weekend blitz like last weekend's will serve to remind idiot drivers that their atrocious driving will be punished.
