Rise in apprenticeships

New data shows that 850 apprenticeships were delivered in the Elmet & Rothwell Parliamentary constituency in the 2010/11 academic year.

And MP for the constituency Alec Shelbrooke this week welcomed the increase of 63 per cent on 2009/10.

“This is great news for the businesses and young people in our area,” said Mr Shelbrooke (pictured).

“This record rise in apprenticeship numbers shows the Government’s commitment to helping employers train the skilled workers they need to build a stronger economy and sustainable growth for our regional and national economy.”

Countrywide apprenticeship starts have increased by over 50 per cent on average, to 442,700 putting Elmet & Rothwell ahead of the national average.

Minister of State for Skills, John Hayes MP commented: “These new figures are great but I am determined to do more, by stripping away bureaucracy for small firms, continuing to drive up standards and working with firms to create even more apprenticeship opportunities in coming years.”
