Problems of cars on Westgate
From: Alan Griffiths, Westgate, Wetherby.
I HAVE read with interest the views of your correspondents regarding the Westgate traffic bottleneck and agree with all the views propounded.
The simple solution to the problem would be to install speed cameras between the junction of Caxton Street and Spofforth Hill, failing that electronic speed reminders signs would help.
As a resident of Westgate I should like to take this opportunity of bringing notice to the authorities that allowing vehicles to park directly outside Westgate row of cottages causes further problems other than those of congestion.
The gutter running alongside the whole length of the cottages cannot be cleaned on a regular basis because the parked vehicles obstruct the Highways cleansing vehicle to do the necessary cleaning.
Falling leaves and general day rubbish remain trapped between the wheels of parked vehicles and cannot be swept away and drains also remain blocked. Mounds of rubbish from the rain waters gradually get diverted across the pavements into some of the cottages cellars.
Can this problem be categorised as a health hazard? Meanwhile, high sided vehicles part parking on the pavement and close to our front walls cut out natural light to our kitchens.
It would help if the authorities painted double yellow lines along the whole length of the row of cottages and then allow vehicles to park on the opposite side of the road as a temporary traffic calming ploy.
