A new book on the history of Thorner is heading towards a sell-out.

Thorner: Fine buildings with interesting histories, was published by Thorner and Historical Society at the end of November and has proved to be a popular Christmas present.

“Many people have bought copies to send to their relatives and friends who no longer live in the village,” explained the book’s author David Miller.

“And lots of people have written to say how much they have enjoyed it.

“It’s really been a great success.” Readers’ comments include: “Very interesting and beautifully put together.” “An easy to read account of some of the history of Thorner and its buildings.” “The book is full of information.”

The book takes readers on a walk through the centre of the village giving the history of many of the buildings passed on the way.

Mr Miller said, “What is so interesting about Thorner is the way many of the old buildings have been put to several uses.

“For example, the Methodist Church in Main Street used to be a school and then became the post office before it took on its present role.”

Mr Miller will be talking about the book on BBC Radio Leeds at 3pm on Monday, January 30.

Work has already started on Thorner and District Historical Society’s next project which will be a joint venture with Thorner Victory Hall.

“The year 2014 marks the centenary of the start of the First World War,” Mr Miller explained.

“And it will also be 90 years since the opening of the Victory Hall which was built as a memorial to the villagers who died in the war.

“Planning is still at an early stage, but we want to find out what life was like in Thorner between 1914 and 1918 and then trace the history of the Victory Hall until the present day.”

Some copies of Thorner: Fine Buildings with Interesting Histories are still available at a cost of £6.50 by phoning 0113 289 2758.
