Broken alcohol bottles left on pitch

From: Claire Stubbs, Secretary of Wetherby Sports Association.

I AM writing with concern regarding ongoing problems that we are experiencing at Wetherby Sports Association. On Friday night approximately 70 youngsters congregated on our junior rugby/football pitches.

One of our members went over with a black bag and asked them if they would clear all their rubbish away which they agreed to. Feeling satisfied with this our member left them.

Meanwhile the police were called as it was obvious that these youngsters were drinking – I would just like to point out that these youngsters were between the ages of 13 and 15 years old.

On Saturday morning we discovered bottles, rubbish and broken glass all over the pitches. Bearing in mind that a junior rugby match was due to take place at 10am we were quite alarmed. Our groundsman spent at least an hour picking up broken glass from the pitches.

I understand that homes in Wetherby have just been issued a leaflet from the Neighbourhood Watch scheme and Inspector Marcus Griffiths talks about how the problem of alcohol in Wetherby has been addressed and that we now see fewer young people with alcohol on the streets in Wetherby.

I would like to suggest to Inspector Griffiths that he takes a walk on a Monday morning before the park cleaners have been around the Ings, Scaur Bank, Millenium Field and the railway line to see that the problem hasn't gone away. He will see for himself the broken bottles, cans and rubbish that are left by these youngsters.

We, at the association, feel that the problem with alcohol is getting worse. You can understand our concern when we find broken bottles and glass on our pitches. We have an awful lot of juniors here who come down on a Saturday and Sunday to play football and rugby and unfortunately feel that an accident is waiting to happen now – ie. one child cuts a vein in his leg on a broken bottle. We are going to have a long long summer.
