REHEARSALS are in full swing as the next production from Harrogate Operatic Players approaches.
A Century of Song is showing from May 8-10 at the Royal Hall and the society is promising a rich variety of song and dance sure to appeal to everyone.
The Players have discovered quite a connection with the Royal Hall and the songs from the golden days of the music hall era which the members are performing.
From the early decades of the 20th century, some first appearances at the Royal Hall included Vesta Tilley (Burlington Bertie) who performed there in 1907, Harry Lauder (1907) and Marie Lloyd (1916). All these will be ‘appearing’ in the May show!
The roaring 20s will feature the ‘flappers’ and Jack Hylton and his band, there will be a tap dance section for the 1930s and the 1940s will feature Vera Lynn, the forces sweetheart.
Ashville College Swing Band will be performing for the 1950s section - the era of the big bands.
There will be a Beatles medley for the 60s and a Rodgers and Hammerstein medley for the 1970s. James Bond will feature in the 1980s and there’ll be a medley of songs from the acclaimed musical Les Miserables.
An Andrew Lloyd Webber medley plus music from Abba concludes the programme.
Tickets (£11-£16) are available from the box office on 0845 130 8840. Performances nightly at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
Proceeds will go towards the Royal Hall Restoration Fund.
