A MAJOR public consultation exercise was launched yesterday in Boroughbridge to decide how to spend £198,000 earmarked for traffic improvements.

Yesterday saw Boroughbridge Community Centre host an exhibition of proposals by North Yorkshire County Council on how the money could be spent.

The proposals include traffic calming measures, a better public transport infrastructure and more facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.

The delivery of questionnaires to every postal address in the area is also underway as part of the exercise.

County Coun John Fort, executive member for highways, said: "Funds have been specifically identified for the implementation of schemes in the Boroughbridge area.

"This is a way of addressing local needs and reflecting local concerns by involving everyone in the community.

"It is hoped that as many people as possible will take the opportunity to express their views on the proposals being put forward."

The cash, which will be spent over two years, comes after Boroughbridge was named one of 28 'service centres' across the county. The money is being made available through the county councils's Second Local Transport Plan.

The plans will be on display again on Saturday April 26 between 11am and 6pm at Boroughbridge Community Resource Centre, above the library in St James Square.
